What is the difference between colonialism and imperialism? Where do the two intersect?
Colonialism is where a country establishes a post and subjects the people to it's rule, along with the laws and elected officials, and taxes. Imperialism is where a country dominates another with their military power and essentially takes over totally. Colonialism was utilized by the various European powers to grow their empires and use pre-established trading routes. Imperialism was utilized in the past by vast empires to quickly grow their empires and establish a rule among the newly conquered people.
Colonialism is when a country takes full control over another and establishes its rule there through the use of colonies. Oftentimes the head of the country will force the colonies to subject to his rule, including paying taxes to him and shipping over their goods to his country. The idea of colonialism is that the conquering country has full power over their colony, and can do whatever with that colony. The the citizens of the colony are often inferior to the country's inhabitants, even the lowest of the low, because they don't live in the country.
Imperialism is when a country expands through military power and promotes its rule through fear. The idea of imperialism is to spread the empire as far as possible without breaking the front lines so that more wealth is gained. Imperialism is where a country takes over the government structure, culture, religion, and resources of another through their military power.
Both colonialism and imperialism focus on the idea of expansion, but colonialism has more to do with settling and establishing new rules where imperialism is just taking over everything in sight by marching on it with the army. The larger a force is the more land it can take over, no matter the method of conquering. The larger, more established, and wealthy a country is, the more land they can handle taking over without going down in flames. Imperialism allows the dominating country to absorb the other country's systems and re-establish their own structure there. Colonialism does almost the same, but the citizens of the conquered country are then citizens with rights the same as those living in the other.
